Why Is Creativity So Good For Us?
Here we are, living in the most challenging times most of us will have ever experienced, in the darkest months to boot. We need creativity now more than ever.
When we are creative, we use our imagination to problem-solve, develop our future goals and visions, and extend hope. Creativity is now understood to help us cope with modern life, stresses and challenges.
A BBC study (the largest of its kind) explored how creativity helps us manage our moods and well-being, as well as cope with stress. Even the smallest amount of creativity acts as a distraction tool, it helps us reassess problems in our life and look forward, and it builds our self-esteem and confidence.
We don’t have to be talented artists or musicians. Creativity will help us in the very act of trying something new and creative, regardless of our skill level. I won’t even try to explain the neuroscience around creativity, but if you are interested here it is … and it is quite fascinating.
I find myself happiest when I am creative. I know when I have not found the time to be creative in the past, I feel ground down by the churn and challenges of life. Other than the creative process of making jewellery, I find creative pleasure and satisfaction in simpler things: writing in my journal, DJing, taking photos, cooking and even rearranging items in a room.
Not only does creativity help reduce stress, improve our moods, and build self-awareness, but it instils pride in us trying something new, and it is also very rewarding to create something special for another person.
The truth is, if we all do creative activities more regularly, we are more likely to benefit from a positive state of mind.
And if you don’t think you are creative - give it a try.
